Holcim plants cited anew for energy efficiency
For excellent operations that led to savings in fuel use and reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, three cement plants of construction solutions company Holcim Philippines, Inc. were recognized by the Department of Energy (DoE) during the 2015 Don Emilio Abello Energy Efficiency Awards.
The company’s plants in La Union, Misamis Oriental and Davao all received Outstanding Awards for their achievements in operational efficiency, improving their performance by at least 5% from the previous year. The awarding ceremony was held in Quezon City on 4 December 2015.
The Misamis Oriental plant tallied energy savings equal to eight million liters of oil and 43 million kilograms of avoided CO2. The Davao facility’s efficiency improvement led to 10 million liters of oil savings and 21 million kilograms of avoided CO2. Finally, the La Union plant booked eight million liters worth of oil savings equal to 17 million kilograms of avoided CO2.
These were obtained through investments in equipment efficiency, increased use of alternative fuels and raw materials, and process improvements.
“We are thankful to the DoE for consistently recognizing our efforts to improve operational efficiency. This is critical to cement manufacturing, an energy-intensive business. This helps us improve our costs and, more importantly, allows us to manage our environment impact,” said Eduardo A. Sahagun, President and Country CEO of Holcim Philippines.
Holcim Philippines is a consistent recipient of the energy efficiency award. Last year, Holcim Philippines’s plant in Norzagaray, Bulacan was elevated to the Hall of Fame for receiving the Outstanding Award for three straight years, while the Misamis Oriental and La Union plants also received awards.
Three managers of Holcim Philippines were also commended as among the 59 Outstanding Energy Managers in the country.
The DoE has been conferring the awards for over 30 years to recognize firms that significantly reduce their energy consumption. Participating companies submit consumption reports that are evaluated by energy officials from the public and private sector. The award is a tribute to Emilio Abello, the former Chairman and CEO of the Manila Electric Co.
