Holcim Philippines bares regional finalists in search for top Pinoy masons

Leading cement maker Holcim Philippines, Inc. has identified the regional finalists who will compete in the 4th ‘galing Mason Awards, the company’s flagship corporate social responsibility program that recognizes the country’s top masons.

The company said that 46 masons from 16 regions made it to the finals after besting 178 other contestants nominated by reputable organizations and individuals in their communities. They were chosen based on their professional accomplishments, employment history, community participation and relationship with their families.

The regional finalists now move on to a skills competition, where their masonry proficiency will be assessed as they build a perimeter fence for a public school in Calamba, Laguna. The top scorers per region will then advance to the national finals.

The 17 national finalists will earn P25,000 in cash, a gift certificate for 20 bags of Holcim cement, a certificate of participation, trophy and a chance to bag the 2013 ‘galing Mason Awards Grand Champion, which comes with a P150,000 cash prize. The winner is considered not just one of the best in his trade, but also a model citizen and family man.

In the 3rd ‘galing Mason Award in 2011, Eduardo Latap of Metro Manila and Alejandro Tagle of Quirino province were named the top winners, the first time two individuals shared the top honors.

Holcim Philippines started the ‘galing Mason Program in 2004. It aims recognize masons' critical role in helping build structures important for development. Aside from the ‘galing Mason Award, the company also holds annual trainings and competitions to help advance the masonry craft and professionalize the trade.
